Ludie B. Sanders was born to the late Clem Varner and Adlena Borom Varner on September 2, 1926, in Hurtsboro, Alabama. Ludie went to be with the Lord on February 9, 2026, at 11:33 a.m.
Ludie was a faithful member of Zion Missionary Baptist Church of East Chicago, Indiana, diligently attending the 7:30 am early morning service until a decline in her heath began.
Ludie was preceded in death by her mother and father, Clem and Adlena Varner; daughter, Leanelle Varner; brothers, Educil, Posher, Paul, Hamp, Preston, and Rozell; sisters, Idella, Louise, Georgia, Ola, and Frankie; and step-son, Jimmy Blevins.
Ludie began her work experience at Community Hospital in 1973, when they first opened their doors, after working at several other places. She retired after 15 years of service. She often related that her beginning hourly rate was $1.35. Even with such minimal pay scale, she enjoyed several different positions from transporting patients, to cleaning surgical supplies, to making the patients smile and feel comfortable.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Annell Varner, Sheree Barnett, Tangela Bush, and Kendra Bush all of Gary, Indiana; grandchildren, Raymond (Elizabeth) Varner, Terrie Smith, Hudson (Sabrena) Varner, Jeffery (Katina) Varner, LaVesha (Ira) Ferguson, Kaneia (Dryl) Jamie, and Jerry (Sakinah) Montgomery; special niece, Marcella Brazelton; and many great and great-grandchildren; favorite nephews, George Key and Ervin Key; cousin, Walter Borom; church members who regularly called or stopped by to see her; Bobby Stiff, neighbor (across the alley), Renee, sister -friend, Carmen; and many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be Monday, February 16, 2026, 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. with Homegoing Services 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. from Zion Missionary Baptist Church 3939 Drummond Street East Chicago, Indiana 46312. Interment Ridgelawn Cemetery 4401 West Ridge Road Gary, Indiana 46408.
